Brunei has always been blessed with many variety of food which is made out of not only local food, but even food from every corners of the world.  Ironic as it may seem, it is no secret that Brunei is well-known among her own people even to her neighbours for the Japanese food.

Excapade Sushi Japanese Restaurant is a name known to every Bruneian for its economical and value for money yet fresh-in-big-portion servings.  However, as big a portion that they offer, we never seem to get enough of it.  During Ramadhan, Excapade offers their Sungkai (breaking of fast) Buffet is one of the buffet among many that I target.  I’m sure I speak for many of my friends as well.  Ever dreamt of unlimited amount of sashimi, sushi, tempura, teriyaki?  Look no further!

For only BND$29.90 (Adults) / BND$19.90 (Children), this is a buffet definitely not to be missed.  If you are a Japanese food lover, you MUST NOT miss this once-in-a-year phenomenon.  The Sungkai buffet is only available at the Gadong main branch (+673 2443012) and the Kiulap Regent Square branch (+673 2234011).

Here are some advise if you choose to try it out:

  • Wait until after the Maghrib prayers before taking the food.  Please give way to our Muslim brothers and sisters first.
  • Try to seat near to the buffet area so that you can spot when they are topping up your favourite dish.  Dishes such as the salmon sashimi, ikura salmon sushi, mini california special, among others are the ones that are constantly being taken, so do watch out for new servings!
  • BOOK early.  Excapade’s Sungkai Buffet is one of the favourite buffets therefore it is usually very full.
  • Excapade tries to vary their dishes being offered, therefore they will rotate the dishes with other types of dishes almost every week.  Don’t be surprise if you are seeing different dishes from what I posted here.

Last of all, to all my Muslims friends, “Selamat menunaikan ibadah puasa and may you have a blessed Ramadhan”.

  1. The sashimi selection looks quite paltry this year. Can see the gap of ice. Last year, It was laid corner to corner til can’t see the ice. Also can’t see any sashimi shrimp (ama ebi)!!! I have a picture of the spread last year and it looked gorgeous. When I see the pic here, I can’t help but feel a little disappointed. can compare with your 2012 photos also eh. huge difference.

    1. Hi Aud, I do agree that the selections seems to be a bit less this year compared to last year. However, its still fine with me as I still get those that I aim for! And above all, there’s no other place which has sashimi offer anyway. Disappointing as it might seem, my stomach is still quite satisfied at the end. Ha ha! Cheers!

  2. Hi, what does this statement mean in practice – “Please give way to our Muslim brothers and sisters first.” ? I was planning to visit Brunei on my way home from a trip to China, but this remark made me think that mayhap I don’t want to? I don’t want to feel second-rate and give way based on other’s personal beliefs.

    1. Hi Martin. I’m not sure of your level of knowledge in regards to Ramadhan, so I’m just going to explain from the start. Ramadhan is the month in the Islamic calendar where fasting is observed by Muslims worldwide. Therefore, during the days of Ramadhan (one month), everyday they will start their fasting during Suhur (before dawn) and will break their fast during Sungkai (sunset). This Excapade Buffet is only during the Ramadhan season and is a Sungkai Buffet feast. Therefore, out of respect for our hungry Muslims brethens who has been fasting the whole day, we non-muslims would give way for them. It is in no-way to mean that we are second-rated.
